Human connection is the answer

If you haven't seen Sir Gareth Southgate's Dimbleby lecture, I invite you to watch a masterclass in leadership. In just 50 minutes, he offers searing commentary on the toxicity of social media today, while providing a compelling blueprint for building a positive culture of growth.

As a coach, I was struck by the clarity of the building blocks he laid out for stronger teams and a stronger society: belief (in ourselves as individuals and as part of a collective) and resilience. He achieves this by focusing on three critical elements: Identity, Authentic Connection, and Culture.

Here are the nuggets that continue to resonate with me:

🪜 Failure is an essential part of the learning process. We need to create a safe environment for growth, free of unrelenting pressure and judgement.

👥 Role models, mentors, and coaches play a crucial role in framing personal and professional development by creating safe spaces to fail, explore, and grow.

🌐 Real-world connection is vital, and its absence will be too easily filled by self-interested forces on social media.

🤝 Community, support, connection, and play are key to growth and success. Nobody can truly succeed in isolation.

🌱 It's okay not to be an expert in an unfamiliar area. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

🔍 Asking difficult questions is an act of bravery essential to authentic leadership.

🤲 Values, and how you treat others, matter.

Have you watched the lecture? I'd love to hear your thoughts and insights.
