Is choice always a luxury?

“Just because you made the right decision, doesn’t mean you won’t have regret.”

I heard that recently and it landed with a thud that continues to echo. Big, life-altering decisions, don’t always come with clarity and certainty. Sometimes choice is not a luxury but a burden. Some decisions might close doors for good. Even after choosing, the ‘what ifs’ still linger.

I’ve had many moments like that in my own career. Now, as a coach, I sit alongside others navigating the same uncertainty. One thing I’ve learnt is that feeling regret doesn’t mean you made the wrong choice. It often just means the decision mattered. It’s also insightful to see how others around you respond to your choice.

About 16 years ago someone offered me a role I eventually turned down in favour of another offer. I still remember his response, “You’ve made a good decision. You’re going to a great place.” It was one of the most generous things he could have said. That moment has stayed with me, and has defined my own values to this day.

What helps you find your way when there’s no clear or easy answer?
